Farnsworth House at Neue Nationalgalerie

Concept/ proposal

Two glass houses by the same architect are united. Mies’ architectural investigation of inside and outside in the ultimate exhibition of space, a throwback to the Barcelona pavilion case.

As Gordon Matta-Clark is quoted, “the difference between architecture and sculpture is whether there is plumbing”. The original Farnsworth House is fully plumbed, but there is not a single detailed photo of the bathroom or kitchen to be found in the literature about the house. There is a case to be made about the Farnsworth Hose as a work of art. By bringing it into the Neue Nationalgalerie it is transformed both into an exhibition ground and an exhibit, plus it becomes a communal space, open to visitors and uninhibited by the strict preservation tactics and opening times of the original.
